BENGALURU: Underscoring the need to improve Bengaluru's infrastructure with 'a sense of alacrity', Infosys co-founder NR Narayana Murthy Wednesday suggested those in the infrastructure industry should work three shifts a day, reports Vindhya Pabolu.Replying to a question on 'What Bengaluru needs to do to become even more successful?' during a fireside chat with Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamathat the Bengaluru Tech Summit-2023 here, Murthy pointed to the slow progress of the Metro rail project in the tech corridor of Electronics City and other parts of the city and said: "Work has to be taken up on priority." "People in infrastructure industry must work three shifts.They should not be just coming at 11am and going back at 5pm - not at least on the Electronics City stretch.

That is what I see, and I may be completely wrong," he said.In nations that have high aspirations, people work two shifts and I have seen people working at midnight there.

We want to be better than those countries.

So, why can’t we ask people to work three shifts,” he asked.

Stating that improvement with infrastructure should be a priority, marked by quick decision-making, Murthy added: “If we do that, our growth will be faster than China’s.” He recounted how Infosys got land allotted at breakneck speed in Shanghai by the Chinese government in 2004.

Murthy yet again made a strong pitch for allowing complete freedom in setting up English medium schools.

“Whether we like it or not, the first task of a good public governance system for Bengaluru is to start English medium schools.

I have met important people from different areas and they have all sent their children to English medium schools.

I have not come across any important person who has sent his children to a Kannada medium school,” he said.

Asked if the level of taxation in India was appropriate, he said: “We are still far away from being called a middleincome country.

There is a large mass of poor people.

I think we, the evangelists of capitalism, must accept that we must pay [income] taxes at a higher rate because there are so many public services that our government can provide to the poor.”
